Beer Safe

If you've ever been in Texas, you may have noticed a peculiar drink for the sale of beer called St. Arnold.
It comes in a different bottle, with a Saint Arnold image itself (the patron saint of beer) right on the label, and appears to be the most successful company in small brewery in Houston.
But St. Arnold was not always profitable small business start is now. In fact, his 13-year history is full of false starts, missed opportunities, and some failures.
I recently had the chance to meet Brock Wagner, founder of Saint Arnold, and his story had a profound effect on me. It all started in 1994, when Brock was a major achievement: time is running out.
In time, Brock was working in the financial services industry by making a good salary, but when his father died unexpectedly, gave Brock the opportunity to reflect. He realized that time was limited, and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life in a job I did not want.
He sat down one day and make a list of what he loved. Near the top two issues: drinking beer and brewing.
For the average person, they may have seemed little chance for a career change. After all, his entire experience was in financial services. What was going to do, go drive a Budweiser delivery truck?
But Brock decided to just follow your heart, and prepared to seek funding to create micro-brewery in Houston first.
From the beginning there were problems with your small home business idea. Money was scarce for such a risky venture. The investors are reluctant to put their hard earned dollars in a business where the founder had no experience in the beverage industry. But after more than a year, Brock had won just enough to start (one of his first investors was Enron's Kenneth Lay, which is a whole other story).
Several years in the project, Brock had secured a plant, built all the brewery equipment and was ready to start making beer! But a week before he was ready for the launch, there was another major setback: an inspector of the city that had been testing the pipes made a mistake with a pressure valve, and finally destroy $ 100,000 in brewery equipment, in just 30 seconds!
What a blow, and barely a week before being prepared for launch. Next Several years were spent in courtrooms, before being reimbursed by the city, but Brock was not deterred. He raised more money, he rebuilt the facility, six months later, finally sent their first bottle of beer Saint Arnold.
It must have been a time to celebrate, but initial sales were disappointing product. In fact, five years after issuing its first bottle of beer Saint Arnold had yet to turn a profit. How easy would it have been to pack things and go home? Even the most die hard entrepreneur would admit defeat after five years is not it? Maybe Houston was not ready to their own micro-brewery.
It was at that moment that Brock's business partner decided to leave the company. Brock bought shares (generously ensure that at least recoup their initial investment, although the company was losing money) and they parted on good terms.
This was the lowest point of St. Arnold, and Brock. With a business in trouble, and very few customers, it is difficult to be optimistic. But over the next five years, Brock was able to slowly but surely transforming Company. Today, Saint Arnold is not only profitable, but that is admired and loved as a tradition of Houston. People ask for the product if a particular bar or restaurant, not carry it, and the brewery is a tour every Saturday that is open to the public. Houston and San De Arnold have become synonymous, and everything is because Brock's refusal to accept defeat.
As an entrepreneur, can learn much from the story of Brock, and we try our own small business startup.
First, never, never, never give up. I have not heard one story of a successful startup of small businesses that do not face setback after setback. Brock took a year to raise enough money. Most people who have quit after a few months of disagreements. The week before his launch of its equipment was destroyed in an accident (at a cost of $ 100,000). Most people who have resigned then, after so much bad luck. And finally, after five years of losing money, Brock remained, after most people have admitted defeat.
Second, I think it's safe to say that the only reason Brock happened is that he loved what he was doing. If he had to face all odds and even taken as beer, probably would not have succeeded. Love your work and enterprise is a prerequisite for success in any home of small businesses, because although things look bleak, unless you're doing what you love.
The challenge for us is finding our own St. Arnold brewery … business we like. And to spend the time necessary to be successful, no matter what the setbacks that may arise.
