Digital Library
INTRODUCTION:
The idea of accessing the finger tip and easy access to information began with the introduction of the machine of Bush and Memex VANNENAR gradually evolving with the advancement of Information Technology. With the advent of computers, the concept focused in large bibliographic databases, recovery offline family and public access systems that are part of a contemporary library. When teams are formed the Internet, the concept evolved again and gradually the research was focused on creating digital libraries and terms like "virtual library", "electronic library" "library without walls" and digital, the more recent term " library have arrived. Rapid advances in information processing, storage and communications technologies have revolutionized the role of libraries worldwide in the dissemination of information services to users. The data is being provided in digital format by the librarians.
According to Fox's digital library is defined as "a new way of carrying out the functions of libraries of libraries covering new types of new resources approaches to information classification and cataloging, the intensive use of electronic systems and networks and drastic changes in intellectual practices, organizational and electronics. "
Some of the common elements which may be a digital library, indicated as the most essential features of the world today as shown in ARL:
I) The digital library is not a single entity;
ii) The digital library requires technology to link the resources of many;
iii) these links are transparent to end users of an information retrieval point the view is a large database;
iv) library science is a big step in the continuous automation of libraries started 25 years ago;
v) Universal access to the digital libraries and information services in the objectives;
vi) For those working in large area of information delivery is a web application;
IMPORTANT FEATURES OF A LIBRARY DIGITAL:
The digital divide require library and digital technologies is the combination of traditional and media collection. The features have been collected from various discussions about digital libraries both online and on paper:
i) Libraries Digital is the digital face of traditional libraries, which includes both traditional and digital collections, collections of fixed media. Therefore electronic and printed materials to obtain their importance.
ii) The digital libraries include digital materials that exist outside of physics and administrative boundaries of the digital library
iii) digital library supports both formal and informal learning processes
iv) Digital libraries will require both the ability as well as librarians and computer scientists to be viable
v) Libraries Digital ideally provide a consistent view of all information contained within a library, regardless of form or format
vi) Digital libraries serve particular communities or groups, such as traditional libraries do now, but communities can be widely distributed throughout the network.
These features are most logical, as it expands and extends the traditional library, preserving the valuable work they do, while integrating new technologies new processes and new media.
LIBRARIANS IN A DIGITAL LIBRARY:
Dr. SR Ranganathan has said that librarianship is a noble profession where you notice the joy of seeing the dawn of happiness in the face of readers, thanks to him to find the right book at the right time. Now – days librarians themselves have the ability to handle new technologies. Electronic media such as diskettes, DVD, CD-ROM are replacing books and magazines. So information literacy is a must for the library and so the professionals libraries are now more regarded as a personnel information.
The librarian must find that these factors should be present in case of a digital library:
Set of services: A digital camera is something the library more the collection of material in their repositories. It provides a variety of services to all users (humans and machines, and producers, managers and consumers of information). There is a wide and varied range of services to support the management of collections, and services to provide replicated storage reliable services to help query formulation and execution, etc.
The collection of information objects: the foundations of a digital library however, must be the formation objects that provide the content. The information objects are collections with the associated management and support. The types of information objects ranging from a "documents" through objects or living dynamic query results.
Support for users from the information objects: Librarians must help users satisfy their needs and requirements for management, access, storage and handling of the variety of information stored in the collection of material representing the 'participation' the library.
The organization and presentation of objects: A library has been created to serve a user community. Users who participate in the digital library must consider its design and be able to refine the design together to better serve the needs their own information. Thus, the use of a digital library depends on the clear and discreet design of the library, its short-term goals and objectives.
Is directly or indirectly: The information objects can be objects can be digital or other media (like paper), but represented in the library through digital media (eg metadata). May be available directly through the network (eg, use of a consultation service for the library to locate and retrieve electronically the information object) or indirectly (for example, the result of the query may give instructions on how to obtain the) object, but is outside the scope of the library
Availability Electronic / Digital: Although the objects are not even electronic, and even though the objects themselves may not be available directly through the network, the objects should be represented electronically in some way by, for example. Metadata or catalogs. Otherwise, should not be considered as part of the digital library
CONCLUSION:
To organize a digital library with all the features mentioned above the library must have professionals who have an instinct to leave the traditional and cope with the advanced modern technology. Taking into account the new challenges of information professionals can undergo short courses, courses, seminars and workshops that help them acquire new skills, such as networking, web-based technologies, the search for the electronic database on CD-ROM, magazines electronic. As with most other technical developments in libraries in recent years, we have to move forward in small, manageable steps, an evolution rather than a revolutionary way quickly.
