If you are considering a scooter or a Vespa as their main means of transportation to save money, there are some things you need to know. Mopeds and scooters are not the same, Scooters and Vespas have different regulations for motor vehicles and safety issues that its larger cousin of the moped. Scooters are inexpensive and can save you money in fuel and insurance. Scooters are easy to maintain and recoup slowly. However, due to its relatively small size, scooters are hard to see drivers of motor vehicles, especially in traffic and the most common injuries are fractures of arms and legs. The following tips will help you safe "scootering"

Wear light or reflective clothing for maximum visibility at night.

Wearing a point, ANSI, or Snell approved helmet that are designed with a tough outer layers and a restraint system to protect the head and brain in a variety of impacts. In 2006, 41% of those killed in accidents not wearing helmets.

If the helmet is not equipped with a face shield, wear goggles or glasses with plastic lenses to protect your eyes against insects, wind, dirt, rocks, or other matter in the air.

Use your elbow and knee pads.

Use slip-resistant shoes and avoid wearing sandals, slippers or shoes lace.

Ride with traffic flow.

Obey speed limits and not travel faster than your skill level or that the conditions permit.

Know how to use hand signals and signal before making a turn or changing lanes.

Use extra caution at intersections, entrances and exits of parking, and entrances.

Avoid hitting road hazards such as sharp bumps and holes in the road surface. These risks may cause loss of control or damage.

Be especially conscious of traffic behind.

Do not use your scooter at night. The scooter is not equipped to operate in conditions of low light or dark. It may not be easily visible to cars, pedestrians or other scooters.

If you ride at night, sure that is a beacon of safety for your scooter.

Ride only on smooth hard surfaces. Motor scooters are not designed to be used in conditions outside road. Be careful when rolling over obstacles.

Avoid gravel roads or uneven.

Do not allow motorized scooter for use in the rain, nor to be driven through puddles. The motor, batteries and controls can be damaged if exposed to water.

The scooter should be operated by a single person at a time. Do not take other people or objects while driving. Do not put additional burdens on the bike for hauling or towing anything.

Scooters must have a seat for road use.

Park not to block sidewalks, disability and building access or emergency units

Check all joints, hinges and quick releases to ensure the bike is properly assembled. Stop using the scooter immediately if any joint, hinge, or release rapidly released.

Maintain proper air pressure in tires. Low air pressure causes the extra rolling friction, reduces the distance the ground and carries the tires faster.

If the brake lever touches the handlebar grip, stop using the bike until it locks the lever.

This list is not totally exhaustive. You should review the specific state standards with their local DMV.
