Making sense of safety ratings can be a bit overwhelming for those looking to buy a safe for the first time. During their search for security, you can run through safety boxes that are "B" rated or "C" rating, TL-15 or TL-30, TRTL15 or TRTL30, safe for RSC, and 1 fire an hour or 2 hour fire rating. We will try to make some sense of it all.
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has been testing and certifying over safes 80 years and therefore know how to think or two about what makes a good insurance. Have developed a classification system that can be divided into three main categories, resistance theft, fire resistance and impact resistance.
To test the resistance to theft, or use the tools of UL (TL) or torches (TR). Instruments you can use is anything that can be found at a hardware store or construction site … drills, hammers, girls, saws, crowbars, hammers, welter oxyacetylene torch, whatever. Ratings are given to a particular insurance for the time it takes the best safecrackers in the world, well … break the safe.
So here are the stolen base rates as specified by UL:
B1 – Theft-resistant (minimum security)
B2 – UL RSC (Residential Security Container) / TL-5 (Proven UL rated for 5 minutes Tool – Single door)
B3 – I voted against theft (incorporates the features of safes security without a UL rating)
B4 – UL TL-15 (proven UL classified for 15 minutes Tool – single door)
B5 – UL TL-30 (proven UL classified for 30 minutes Tool – single door)
B6 – UL or 30×6 TRTL-TL-30×6 (UL Tested or land too Torch rated on all six sides for 30 minutes)
Now, as you probably know, security boxes also are classified by the amount of time that can be expected to maintain their contents below 350 degrees Fahrenheit (paper ignites at 400 degrees). Time and temperature are considered outside in the UL classification system as follows:
UL Class 350 – 1 / 2 number of fire of an hour (with heating for 1 / 2 hours at 1550 degrees)
UL Class 350-1 one-hour fire rating (heated for 1 hour at 1550 degrees)
UL 350-2 Class Evaluation fire an hour (with heating for 2 hours at 1550 degrees)
UL Class 350-1 one-hour fire rating and test label Impact
UL Class 350 -2 fire an hour and a tag number impact test
UL listed for insurance to be called "Impact Rated "is heated to 1,550 degrees centigrade in a furnace, referred to three stories and dropped into a pile of bricks and then returned to the oven and reheated.
