DEC is thought to improve physician and hospital efficiency in general, reduce costs and promote standardization of care. It is also suspected that reduce medical errors and ultimately increase the quality of care. Researchers at Harvard University have just published a study that may be the first real test electronic medical records have an advantage over traditional paper systems.
The benefits that surround the universal adoption electronic medical records seem obvious, but until recently, there have been limited so to illustrate them. A Harvard research organization has published a study showing that electronic medical records offer a substantial advantage over traditional paper systems.
As more suppliers health care are introduced into the medical management software, the time of EMR (electronic medical record) is becoming a familiar term. It can also be called an EHR (electronic medical record) or PHR (patient's medical record).
EMR is essentially a medical history of a patient in digital format. Includes information on each patient demographics, insurance, prescription records, test results, the history, progress notes, and so on. It also includes identifiers to locate the digital file in a database, and with proper authorization, can be accessed from anywhere in a health facility or offsite.
It is believed that the physician DEC increase efficiency, reduce costs, promote standardization, improve quality of care and reduce medical errors. Although they have existed for almost 30 years, it is estimated that approximately 10% of health facilities using a comprehensive medical management software system. The study showed that 6.1% of physicians using DEC have suffered a medical malpractice suit, compared with the 10.8% using the traditional paper charts. In the United States, an estimated 100,000 deaths occur each year due to medical errors. These medical errors are often the result of miscommunication, transcription errors, adverse reactions to drugs and incomplete patient medical records. EHRs ensure doctors immediate and universal access to medical history of a whole patient, and improve communication between primary care physicians, specialists, nurses and other health workers to avoid costly mistakes.
According to the industry standard, the principal investigator Steven Simon, MD, MPH, says: "The results of this study indicate that prevention of medical malpractice claims may be another reason for doctors, practices and policy makers to move forward with efforts towards universal adoption and optimal use of electronic health records.
Simon and his team are just a group of people working hard to promote the universal adoption of the CRD. The Veterans Hospital in Buffalo is an example the successful transition to a management practice. Companies such as e-MDS strive to support this movement with the revolutionary medical management software. The Congressmen Peter Stark is leading the way with their health-e Information Technology Act of 2008 introduced in the House last September.
As increasing numbers of followers, hopefully awareness and funding will continue. The benefits of DEC realized more and more time with the approval universal.
