Choosing a Locksmith, things to consider

December 1, 2009 · Posted in Home Security

There are a wide variety of reasons why you might need to use locksmiths.  Maybe you’ve been locked out of your home or your car, and need to get back in.  You might have had your lock broken or damaged in some shape, or you could just need to change your locks to make your house safer.  No matter what your reasons for needing a locksmith, you would like to make sure that you choose a good one.

There are a number of alternative ways you’ll be able to find locksmiths that work in your area.  You can ask your pals and relatives for recommendations, you can check the phonephone directory, or you can look on the internet.  However, you do not just wish to call the first company you see listed and hire them.  You should do a bit of research first.

There are a lot of locksmith cons out there, so it is best to make sure the company really is at the address where they are listed.  You also need to check to make sure that there are not any superb grumbles listed against the company.

Ask for a quote for how much the work will cost, and if the person who arrives tells you something different, don’t allow them to do the work as this might not be a credible company or individual.  When you call for quotes be sure to ask if there are any extra fees, since some firms charge extra costs for things like coming out at night and emergency service.

Ask for identification from the locksmith, and expect him to request your identification too.  You wouldn’t need him to let just anybody into your home, they should ensure you are the person that is supposed to be in the house.

Most reputable locksmiths will come in a vehicle with the corporation’s name on it, and have business cards and invoices with the corporation’s name on them.  They will give you an itemized invoice listing all of the parts and labor and prices for each so you can see what you are paying for.

Good locksmiths can mostly get you back into your house without destroying your locks if you’re just locked out.  Most will have the appropriate tools to get past the bulk of locks ( which is the reason why you need to deal with a credible individual ).  If they want to drill out your lock, they may not be a good selection.  They may be attempting to get additional money from you since that time you’d need new locks and new keys as well as being let into your house.

A pro will also let you know if there are any issues that might cause your locks to be less effective.  For instance, if your door starts to come apart, or wiggles, then locks will not be as secure.  The locksmith should look into this kind of thing as well as just installing a new lock, which might not be the single thing that should be done.
