How effective are burglar alarms?

Bristol suffers over 7000 burglaries each year. Protect your home by reviewing your current security measures.

  • Home Office reports show that 84% of burglars are deterred by alarms and 82% would be put off by closed circuit television surveillance
  • The installation of alarms on some estates in Safe and Secure Homes Schemes have reduced burglaries by 80% and lead to an increase in reported feelings of safety by residents  (as reported by the BBC)

Think like a burglar!

Where are the weak points in your home security?  Are there accessible windows, unlockable windows or an open shed full of useful ladders to get to upstairs windows?   Burglars dislike gravel as it is too noisy.  Is there a burglar alarm visible from the road?   Is the alarm also visible at the back of the house?

Burglar alarms in Bristol help deter thieves

For every house with an intruder alarm, there are at least nine without.  Reformed burglars who work with police in Bristol report that they would walk past the houses with burglar alarms and target the ones without.

Installing a burglar alarm is not just a deterrent to thieves, it provides a warning to you, the police and neighbours in the unfortunate event of an actual break-in.

Which Burglar alarm?

Alarms can be audible only, monitored or DIY.

  • False alarms triggerred by badly installed DIY alarms are not looked on kindly by police or fire authorities and are therefore not recommended.
  • Many alarm companies offer audible only alarms which are perfectly adequate for most homes.   Police and fire authorities will respond to these alarms if there is a reliable report of a burglary taking place.
  • Alarm monitoring is carried out by an ARC where false alarms are identified and only true emergencies are sent to the police or fire services who respond immediately.

Effective Intruder Alarms

Getting the correct burglar alarm depends on finding one that suits each house and the people within it.  Find an NSI approved alarm company who offer a security survey, often free, to identify your particular needs.   They can design, install and maintain your burglar alarm system so that it continues to provide the protection you need to help you and your family feel safe in your home.
